Project Size: 10,600 Project Type: Municipality/Public Works
Architect: Calpo Hom & Dong Architects
General Contractor: Allen L. Bender, Inc.

Project Description

Why architect, Dennis Dong, replaced a long-time, hometown manufacturer with Metal Sales.

California architect, Dennis Dong, had always used a manufacturer in his home town when metal walls and roofs were spec-ed. But for one project, he received shop drawings from a company called Metal Sales. “Who is Metal Sales?” he remembers asking. But then they showed up on the site. The installer did a fantastic job. The patterns all matched. The range of colors were exactly right. Metal Sales had his attention.

Sometime later, Dennis met a Metal Sales representative at a trade show and struck up a conversation about that project, and others, Metal Sales had done for Dennis. This started a relationship of superior service and responsiveness that continues over a decade later – a relationship Dennis describes in this way…

“I realized Metal Sales not only provided the profiles and colors I wanted in metal siding and roofing, but the performance, too. Sure, anyone can submit a bid, but I pretty much use Metal Sales as my standard now.

Why metal, Dennis?

“I like the texture metal siding provides, and by “texture” I mean the different flute sizes available in metal siding. Plus, the heat here in California means the exterior of buildings can take a beating. We architects love using our wood, but wood stands no chance in this sun. Metal is one of the materials that perform very well in these extremes. Plus it has a baked-on finish which means little or no maintenance, which my owners love.”

Why Metal Sales, Dennis?

“My main draw as an architect is patterns and colors, and as far as I’m concerned Metal Sales’ selection of patterns and colors – combined with performance – is well above everyone else. I’ve also started using their concealed fastener system metal siding, which makes for a very seamless and beautiful finish.

“And their service? When I need information, my rep always gets back to me within the same day.

When I need samples, Metal Sales provides them. With other firms, getting samples is like pulling teeth. During construction and with the installer, they’re good at submitting their shop drawings and installation drawings for my review and approval, to make sure they’re meeting my expectations.

“For all of those reasons I’d recommend Metal Sales to other architects or design professionals.”

Can you share an example project, Dennis?

> Project Type: Fire Station

> Project Description: New, 2-story, 10,600 sq. ft. building designed to replace the existing fire station without increasing the building’s space footprint. The station is located in the heart of the community and has become a bit of an icon, acting as a natural place where kids cross the street to school, and pedestrians, runner, and cyclists are numerous. As a result, a patio area was built in as a public space, with a picnic table, drinking fountain and dog fountain was included in the design. Gable roofs were mimicked to compliment the residential areas, and the metal roofing and siding were very beneficial in creating the effect.

> General Project Features: Apparatus bays (3x1 vehicles deep) -- administrative offices -- living quarters w/ 6-person crew accommodations -- exercise room -- equipment turnout areas -- decontamination areas -- training/hose tower -- fueling area

> Metal Features: Standing metal seam roofing -- gutters & trim including fascia covers -- metal soffits at all roof overhangs -- exterior metal siding

> Architectural Firm’s Evaluation of Project: The combination of metal roofing, soffits and siding provide the desired colors and texture while also providing great durability in the hot California temperatures.

> Client Evaluation of Project: “In addition to blending in nicely with the aesthetics of the neighborhood, there have been no weather-proofing issues. It has not faded and still maintains its beautiful appearance.”

We’ll come through for you!

How can we be so confident? Because we’ve made it our business to understand what architects want and need. For Dennis it was colors, patterns, samples, shop drawings and responsiveness.

We’d love a shot at earning your business, too.
