Project Description

Metal Sales Manufacturing Corporation played a key role in the design of the new, $15 million, 55,000 square foot Rabbit Hole Distillery. The extensive use of Metal Sales wall panels lended itself to the modern design both outside and inside. Located in the trendsetting NuLu neighborhood of Louisville, Ky this new open floor plan distillery lets guests see all aspects of the bourbon making process. The bourbon experience is highlighted by the 48 foot tall still and a wide outdoor staircase clad with Metal Sales perforated aluminum panels ushering guests to the Overlook Tasting and Hospitality space above the atrium.

As we often do, our team worked closely with the architect, Douglas V. Pierson of pod architecture + design PLLC, to achieve the vision of Rabbit Hole Distillery owner, Kaveh Zamarian.

Metal Sales contributions to Rabbit Hole Distillery’s modern design were wide-ranging. The distillery features over 13,500 square feet of Metal Sales panels throughout the building.

When the design called for custom panels, Metal Sales delivered with their new Concealed Fastened Empire Series EM1-155 wall panels. The 24 gauge panels installed vertically and horizontally in Champagne Metallic and Dark Bronze were the perfect solution. The distillery’s stairwell panel is a custom perforated .032” aluminum direct fastened panel that was the perfect accent in Champagne Metallic.

Metal Sales also provided 24 gauge, 12” coverage soffit ceiling panels in Matte Black, Linen White and Champagne Metallic. Interior 24 gauge, 12” coverage wall panels in Dark Bronze and Matte Black completed the modern design.

Here is some more feedback from our Rabbit Hole partners!

How did Metal Sales panels contribute to the aesthetic and feel of Rabbit Hole Distillery?

Kaveh (Distillery Owner): “The panels from Metal Sales were a nod to the depth, the solidness, the sturdiness of American whiskey and bourbon. The glass and steel speak to the transparency. You can look in, you can look out. There’s no smoke and mirrors or hidden secrets.”

“My aesthetics are more modern. With this distillery in particular the cues are based on modern architecture like Jean-Louis Cohen and Ludwig Meis van der Rohe and that whole school of form follows function. Metal Sales, Douglas and I adapted and interpreted that [concept] to form follows process.”

Douglas (Architect): “Architects are always looking for interesting materials to not just fit the spec, so to speak, but to create an expressive and interesting environment for people to experience. Form, function and aesthetics are co-dependent. You can’t think about one without the other. Functionally, it’s a very durable material. And it’s adaptive and flexible and can be coordinated with a lot of other different materials. It can be used on the interior and exterior. And those things are things we look for when to comes to aesthetics so that we can be consistent and express the materials in an honest way.”

How involved was Metal Sales in the design process?

Douglas (Architect): “We developed the skin of the building hand-in-hand with Metal Sales. The support started in the early stages through conceptual metal skin development. It continued through detailing, design development and construction documents and then it followed through during construction and installation.”

Any innovations as a result?

Douglas (Architect): “We actually worked with Metal Sales early on with R&D on how to develop a concealed fastener system. We looked at the constraints of the system and maximum span and figured out not only how we could make a concealed fastener system but express the joints in a different way. So, we kind of took it to a new level and Rabbit Hole was the flagship project for that.”

Would you recommend Metal Sales to other builders and/or architects?

Douglas (Architect): “I already am. We’re doing a house in North Carolina and I’m working with Metal Sales to see if we can coordinate on a smaller scale. I would work with them again on a larger scale project as well.”

Kaveh (Distillery Owner): “When it comes to business partnerships, if I find the right partner, it makes all the difference. Besides craftsmanship, attention to detail, having the right partner who’s able to be responsive to the customers need is critical. Metal Sales was certainly responsive to our needs. With that respect, I would certainly recommend them and if I had another project, I would definitely go back to them.”

Although we have extensive experience in providing metal panel expertise in design innovation, support and customization in the sprit industry throughout the United States from distillery’s, brewery’s and winery’s – The Rabbit Hole Distillery is extra special to us since we’re also located in Louisville, KY since 1963.
