STEEL VS VINYL SIDING

Investing in quality siding is a significant decision—one that shouldn’t be made without thorough consideration of the siding options available. In this article, we will dive deeper into two popular options in steel and vinyl.

STEEL SIDING PROS:

Long-lasting and durable – Steel siding can last 40 to 60 plus years. It’s one of the longest-lasting options you can use for home siding.

Low maintenance – Once steel siding is properly installed, it needs a minimal amount of upkeep.

Fire resistance – Steel is a non-combustible material that provides maximum protection from fires.

Curb appeal – You get a large variety of different colors, profiles, and styles. This allows you to create a truly custom look.

Eco-friendly – Steel is a construction material that is environmentally friendly. It’s made from recyclable material that can also be recycled at the end of the siding’s lifespan.

Fire resistance – Steel offers exceptional fire resistance. With vinyl, on the other hand, the plastic will warp and melt if enough heat or flame is applied.

STEEL SIDING CONS:

Higher cost – The price of steel siding will depend on the specifics of the panel you choose including gauge, profile and paint system.

Climate restrictions – Certain areas are not ideal for steel panels such as near the ocean which could lead to corrosion due to the salt.

VINYL SIDING PROS:

Affordability – This siding is the most affordable siding option on the market.

Easy installation – You will save time and money on installation because it’s a less expensive material to install.

Low maintenance – It doesn’t require a lot of upkeep, but it is recommended to do a yearly inspection.

VINYL SIDING CONS:

Shorter lifespan – Vinyl can begin to show its age and start to fade after 10 to 15 years.

Not environmentally friendly – Vinyl siding is made of PVC, or Polyvinyl Chloride, which releases greenhouse gases, carcinogens, and sulfur dioxide while it’s being manufactured.

Less curb appeal – Vinyl can look cheap/unattractive and can fade/crack over time.

While consumers may spend more money on steel siding initially, their siding choice is likely pay to off in the long run, since steel has significantly greater longevity than vinyl.
